Background
The MARCUS A. FOSTER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE (MAFEI) through its Move Further Student Grants, provides mini grants to qualifying current students, or graduates of Oakland public schools (ages 4-21) each year.  The goal of Move Further Student Grants is to foster the personal development and resiliency of young people by providing them opportunities to develop new skills and broaden their life experiences by exploring the world around them.  Students are encouraged to identify activities including, but not limited to performing and visual arts, leadership development, physical education, tutoring, foreign languages, and pre-college exploration. Students are encouraged to seek activities that are new or unique to their everyday life experience.

  • Provide written statement of demonstrated financial need (see application cover page)

Apply, IF under 18 years of age, with an adult sponsor (parent, teacher, youth counselor, primary care provider, mentor, etc.).
Grant Categories

  • MAFEI will NOT reimburse the applicant for activity fees paid by the applicant prior to the approval of the grant award.
  • Money may not be used to fund child care, college tuition or religious activities.
  • Grants are awarded to INDIVIDUALS. Only ONE grant awarded per student, per year.  The amount of each grant award is based upon the applicant’s individual merit, (see Application Requirements section below).
